Darshana A Nair

The paper leak and subsequent retest of the CBSE’s econmics paper didn’t deter Bhavan’s Varuna Vidyalaya Thrikkakara Kochi’s Darshana A Nair from topping the commerce stream. Let’s learn some success mantra from this dedicated student.

What role did your teachers and parents play in your success?

>> I dedicate my success to my parents and teachers. There were times when I felt like I could not give any more, but both my teachers and parents supported me throughout. My parents were always there for me, be it providing moral support or helping me cope up with studies. I am blessed to have such an amazing group of teachers who cleared my silliest doubts and inspired me to work harder.

Well-being is must for success. How did you take care of your physical and mental well-being during the hectic exam season?

>> The four months before the Board exams is the most important period. My parents played the most important role in helping me maintain my physical and mental health. They made sure I get enough brain food and time outdoors. My teachers and parents helped me frame a time table with enough leisure time. I took a 15 minutes break after every hour of studying, and this helped rejuvenate my mind. It is also important that you get atleast 8 hours of sleep, even during your exams.

Achievers keep their priorities in order. How do you align your short-term goals with your long-term goals?

>> I feel that everyone must frame their short-term goals along their long-term ones. Every action we take must coincide with our game plan, towards our higher aim. My short term aim was to score above 95% and I was willing to work hard for it. It is very normal to feel confused about one’s aim, but with time, and help from your teachers and parents, you can frame an outline and work towards filing the frame.

Theoretically, toppers are more vulnerable to exam anxiety because one mark here and there can make a big difference in their outcomes. How do you deal with exam anxiety?

>> I feel that a mark here and there makes a huge difference for everyone alike. Spending more family time, talking to your best friend when you are tensed, listening to music and spending some time outdoors can surely help in reducing anxiety.

Toppers are considered superheros. But then, even a superhero has some weaknesses. What are yours? And how do you overcome them?

>> My weakness has always been being tensed. I always feel like I am not ready for an exam or that I have not prepared enough. The last minute preparing sessions and the moments before the exam are the most tough ones. I made sure that I get enough sleep the day before the exams and I prepared short notes which I can scan just before the exam. These, I think, helped me overcome my tension.

Nowadays, social media is a big distraction for students. How did you ensure that it did not negatively affect your performance?

>> I give all the credits to my parents for this! They made sure that I keep my phone away during my study hours. They kept a constant check on me to ensure that I do not get distracted.

Can you share your success mantra in a few words?

>> I believe that it is not the hours and days that you put in for preparation that matters. It is the hours you put in with full concentration that matters. I feel that 10 hours’ worth of just studying is equivalent to 5 hours’ worth of fully concentrated studying.

What was your exam game plan? Any study strategies you would like to share with your juniors?

>> I feel that it is the 4 months before your Board exams that matter the most. From your first model exams, you should allocate your time in such a manner that you have enough time for studying, family, friends and also, yourself. The strategy I would like to share is to remain calm and to ask for help whenever you need it, without any hesitation.
