Boost Your Memory
Aeschylus once said, “Memory is the mother of all wisdom.” Having a good memory not only boosts your grades but also gives a boost to your life. So boost your memory by following these six simple tricks.
FOCUS FOR EIGHT SECONDS
In nowadays fast paced world even 8 seconds seems like a lot of time. But it’s worth it. Studies show that the minimum time required by a piece of information to go from our short-term memory to long-term memory is 8 seconds. So remember, next time you really need to remember something, focus on it for 8 seconds.
EXERCISE
Exercise increases alertness and circulation of blood which in turn increases the oxygen supply to the brain. It can also help in increasing brain cells. So indulge in little physical activity daily. Even a little jog can do the trick. A study showed that both verbal and spatial memory improved in people who followed an exercise routine for six months.
VISUALIZE
One of the most effective and best way to remember something is to visualize it. Make an image in your brain and you are more likely to remember its associating information.
SLEEP
We all have tried to sit and cram whole night for an important test. The fear of the uncovered course makes it almost impossible to sleep. But sleeping is more beneficial for our grades than studying whole night. Studies have shown time and again that while asleep, our brain processes all the information and decides what to keep and what to throw. So basically sleep helps us to remember information better. And most importantly during sleep the information is stored into long term memory. So remember to get your zzz’s before a test.
WRITE THINGS DOWN
If you need to remember an important thing, just write it down. Not on tablets or mobile but actually write it down on a piece of paper. This can even be used as notes for future references. Studies show that the act of writing is much better for future recall as compared to our keyboards and touch screens. And what’s more? It is not even necessary that you read it again later. Just writing it down can do the trick.
TURN OFF MUSIC WHILE STUDYING
Everyone loves playing music and doing maths problem. Don’t we? But studies prove that any noise, be it music, can be a great source of distraction while studying. And you will recall less of what you have studied in future. While listening to music before you start studying can really refresh your brain and help you study better, stick to a no-music rule while studying.
